May is the time of year when Myrtle Beach really begins to come to life. The warm weather and sunny days bring everyone outside, and there is lots to do and see. This month holds several big annual festivals that are fun for the whole family. See some of the events we are looking forward to so you can make plans!
May 7: The Blessing of the Inlet- This year is the 20th anniversary of the annual Blessing of the Inlet in Murrells Inlet. Held at the Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, the festival is an all day event, celebrating the beauty of the Inlet with entertainment, arts and crafts, vendors, food from local restaurants, a children’s area with inflatable rides and entertainment including gospel choirs, musicians, and dance groups. The actual blessing ceremony begins at 11:30 AM, rain or shine. The event coordinators have teamed up with Recycle Grand Strand to make the festival a “green” event and will be recycling glass, tin, aluminum, plastic bottles and cardboard.
May 7: Rivertown Music & Craft Beer Festival- Jam out by the Waccamaw River in historic Downtown Conway to bands like The Palmetto Fifty-Fours, The Spots and Southern Blue. Check out classic cars during the car show and enjoy great food and craft beer tastings. Presented by Conway Alive, a local organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Downtown Conway, the event is rain or shine, so come on out to Conway and have a great time.
May 14-15: Blue Crab Festival- The “World Famous” Blue Crab Festival is held to support and showcase the communities of Little River and North Myrtle Beach. Now in its 35th year, the festival is a tradition. It has been awarded the Best Annual Event/Festival by the Sun News for six years. It is one of the largest festivals in our area, with recorded attendances of over 50,000 people. The festival features around 300 art and craft vendors, a children’s area, food, entertainment, and of course, blue crabs and other fresh local seafood catches for you to try.
May 20-22: XCON World- Attention comic book fans: the Myrtle Beach Convention Center is where you want to be to see all your favorite heroes face to face! The annual convention features celebrities, writers and artists from some of your most loved comics, books, movies and television shows. Celebrity guests for this year include: Don Teems, Jeremy Ambler and Gregory Finch from “The Walking Dead”, Nicole Chielli from Sy-Fy’s “Face Off”, Cody Saintgnue from MTV’s “Teen Wolf” and many more. The three day event features exhibits, meet and greets with the celebrity guests, role-playing and other exciting events. This is the first year the convention will also hold a Cosplay-Maggedon Costume Contest where the best costumes compete for $10,000 in cash and prizes that are up for grabs. So come to the Convention Center and get your super fan on for the weekend!
